Will `Basanti’ pay Gabbar Singh Tax on her wheat?

By Tenali Rama

Forty four years after Gabbar Singh famously enquired which chakki ka atta the people of Ramgarh feed their women with, he has got the answer. It has come to light that the wheat grain is procured personally by Basanti from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh. The well-guarded secret came to light when Basanti was caught on camera, cutting the wheat crop from a field.

“Yes, I admit Thakur Baldev Singh had told me not to disclose our procurement process and the location of the Mathura chakki to anyone. But all media friends think main yahan Mathura me paanch saal se ghaas hi kaat rahi hoon. So I decided to show it is not grass, it is wheat,” clarified Basanti, sitting in her SUV, Dhanno.

Reacting to the disclosure, Gabbar Singh, the founder-president of the Chambal Dacoits Welfare Association (Ramgarh branch) said Basanti cannot send the wheat crop to the flour mills without paying tax on it. In a statement, Gabbar Singh said the produce will attract 12 per cent GST.

“Gabbar Singh Tax will have to be paid. Along with it, since Basanti engaged commercial photographers to shoot her while she was working in the field, she will have to pay 18 per cent tax on it too,” read the statement.
The Congress was quick to pounce on the embarrassment caused to Basanti, who is now with the BJP. Rahul Gandhi reacted during his election campaign trail to Gabbar Singh’s statement.

“This is the problem, Bhaiya,” said Rahul Gandhi. “Now when a BJP candidate has to pay Gabbar Singh Tax, let me see how they react. I want to assure Mrs Basanti Veeru that we will stand by her. Hum bilkul khade rahenge. Let us see if Modi ji also supports our position on GST or will he ask Mrs Basanti Veeru to pay GST.”

However, Veeru has clarified that there is no question of paying GST.

“I had told Basanti, in kutton ke saamne fasal nahi kaatna. But meri koyi sunta hi nahi hai. Neither Basanti nor her mausi,” said Veeru, speaking to Tenali Rama in a telephonic interview.

Thakur too has condemned the demand to pay GST on the wheat grain and the atta. He has threatened to remove Gabbar Singh from the Ramgarh Whatsapp group if he does not back off. Ramlal, the Admin of the Whatsapp group on Thakur’s behalf, confirmed that Gabbar Singh had indeed been warned.

Speaking to Tenali Rama, Gabbar Singh has dared Thakur to remove him from the Whatsapp group.

“Didn’t the sarkaar impose 28 per cent GST when the reward amount of Rs 50000 on my head was claimed? Rules are the same for everyone. In fact, I do not allow even Kaalia to eat my namak till he pays GST on it,” Gabbar Singh said.

Meanwhile, backchannel talks are on to defuse the crisis. Jai who has been asked to mediate, has reportedly told Gabbar Singh, Basanti, Veeru and Thakur to take a break.

Kuch din to gujariye Gujarat me,” said Jai, extending the invitation.
